Emerging markets will generate a quarter of the additional sales generated online in the next five years. While internet retailing is offering some respite to the downward pressures facing retailers in developed markets and remains an opportunity for growth, the emerging markets will become increasingly attractive markets for retailers to sell into, whether retailers operate stores in them or not.

In 2011/2012 the largest emerging markets are climbing up the rankings and China, for example, is expected to become the second largest internet retailing market in 2016. Euromonitor International will examine what are the opportunities for some of the other large emerging markets and what are the specific characteristics shaping each of them.
